La Corneta Taqueria (San Mateo)

Just like Deadpool...I am a burrito connoisseur. Well, technically he likes the chimichangas ( I like to call them deep fried burrito thingys). La Corneta is one of my regular burrito haunts. I can't say that I've ever had a bad experience here. The one call out is that you can't be surprised if you have to walk a half mile from where you parked because of the lack of open parking spots.

Located on the "Rodeo Drive" of the Peninsula, or Burlingame Avenue as the locals call it...you can expect to pass several upscale stores as well see a few nice cars. Ferrari, check....Lamborghini, check...Bentley, check.....Maserati, check....Mercedes...what? a ghetto car on Burlingame Ave? You get the picture. You can also expect to pay premium for your stuffed Mexican sleeping bag. When you're paying about $10K a month for a lease, prices are going to be on the premium side. As for my burrito joints; I like to rate them based on a few factors: Quality (freshness), Price, Quantity (size), Salsa and Chips and Selection.

Quality: I've probably been to about 15-20 different spots in the San Mateo/Burlingame area. This one is about as fresh as it gets. Like most places, if you come right before closing, you're likely to get whatever is left. This means your carnitas or carne asada might be on the drier side. If you come during prime lunch or dinner hours you should have no problemo getting nice juicy meat in your tortilla. 5/5.

Price: As stated above, this place is located on prime real estate, thus prices are going to be at the top of the range. Expect to pay about $9 before tax and tip for a standard super burrito (all the fixin's). If you want extra meat or to make it a wet one, add a few more bucks. Going to give this a 3/5.

Quantity: This place is on the pricey side for burritos and quesidillas, BUT, they don't skimp on the size. Expect to get a good size burrito for your money. Not quite a foot long, but pretty pretty close...the girth is on the larger size too. We are talking about burritos, right? 5/5.

Salsa and Chips: One of my pet peeves is a place that doesn't have a self serve salsa bar. Thankfully this one does. Truthfully, this wouldn't be my go to place if it didn't. They have a nice self serve salsa bar at the back of the restaurant. Expect to find the normal pickled radishes, carrots and jalapenos, plus two kinds of pico (one mild and one somewhat spicy). They also have three other kinds of salsa. A mild red sauce, a semi chunky mild spicy sauce and a avocado-tomatillo salsa. They also have two other salsas that they keep at the counter. One of which is a habenero sauce which will be enough heat for just about anyone. They do not have self service chips, but they do give you a decent amount with your burrito.

4/5.

Selection: They have a large menu that runs the gamut. From burritos, quesidillas, tacos, to full on dinner plates. They also have a wide variety of seafood for all you pescatarians. As for the meat selection; they have all your ones you would expect to find at a Mexican joint....carne asada, carnitas, pollo (3 different ways), al pastor and lengua (yummy tongue). They don't have buche, but they do have both menudo and barbacoa on the weekends. 5/5. ***My go to: Chicken Mole Super Burrito with mole sauce, cheese and guacamole on top.

So, what are you waiting for! Head down to fancy-town. Don't worry about the snobby looks you get when you come rollin' down in your Toyota Camry. Because you will be fat and happy after your burrito the size of your forearm, while they likely will be starving after eating their $20 kale salad. Oh, did I mention that they also have a tequila bar :)
